Wendy – Biology | Chemistry | Physics

With a teaching career spanning over three decades, Wendy has been dedicated to inspiring young people through science since 1994. Her journey began in a mixed comprehensive school and has evolved across diverse settings, including challenging inner-city schools, pupil referral units, and HE/FE colleges. This extensive background has cultivated a highly adaptable, empathetic, and resilient professional.

Wendy’s academic foundation lies in mammalian physiology and biochemistry, holding a joint honours degree from Cardiff University and a PGCE from the University of Bristol. This expertise fuels a lifelong passion for Biology, which she teaches at A-level and IB, alongside KS3 and KS4 Science.

Throughout her career, Wendy has held numerous leadership positions, including Head of Department. Currently leading Biology in a high-achieving state school, she recently oversaw exceptional examination results where 100% of students achieved a passing grade and over 50% secured A* or A. This success follows 12 years in international independent education, where her students consistently achieved 100% A*–C.

Beyond the laboratory, Wendy has spent four decades organising educational experiences ranging from university outreach to expeditions in Honduras. She believes learning opportunities exist everywhere and takes pride in helping students connect scientific theory to the natural world. Her greatest joy is witnessing students nurture their curiosity and grow in confidence.

For the past seven years, her dog, Otter, has been an integral part of this journey. Having accompanied Wendy in school since she was a pup, Otter provides emotional support and acts as a "biological role model," helping to create a reassuring atmosphere where students feel safe to learn.

At the core of Wendy’s philosophy is a commitment to removing barriers to education. By choosing not to "sweat the small things," such as forgotten equipment, she focuses instead on celebrating small wins and building student pride. Wendy has also served the wider community as a mentor, exams officer, external examiner, and SENCO, where she implemented individual education plans for students with diverse learning profiles.

Wendy’s teaching style is relaxed and approachable yet academically robust. As a skilled listener, she builds strong relationships that ensure every learner feels supported, challenged, and empowered to reach their full potential.
